Two famous piano quartets—one composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1785; the other completed by Gabriel Fauré in 1883—form the basis of a musical exploration of Classical and Romantic styles. Mozart’s piano quartet in G minor, K. 478, is a dark and dramatic work by our most famous “Classical” composer. In contrast, Fauré’s piano quartet in C minor, Op. 15, is a sweeping lyrical work by the great French Romantic. Join us for a brief guided musical tour of both works, followed by complete performances featuring the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra All-Stars: Robin Sharp (violin), Ben Simon (viola), Eric Gaenslen (cello), and Keisuke Nakagoshi (piano).

Ben Simon, Violist; Music Director, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra (SFCO)

Ben Simon is in his 18th season as music director of the SFCO. Simon, a violist, puts down his baton to join his fellow SFCO All-Stars for select performances. He is also the music director of the award-winning youth ensemble Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra. Simon has been teaching Continuing Studies courses since 1996, and has organized popular events featuring the music of Beethoven, Bernstein, Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky.

San Francisco Chamber Orchestra (SFCO)

The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra brings its professional, admission-free classical music concerts to the Peninsula many times per year through its MainStage concerts in Palo Alto, the Family Concert series at the College of San Mateo Theater, and the Very First Concerts at the San Mateo Public Library main branch.
