Persuasion and negotiation are often treated as separate skills. This course begins with a different premise: to move people, we often need both. Asking for a raise, for example, requires more than making a persuasive case. You also need to understand the other person's interests, recognize resistance as information, and know when to advocate, listen, or adjust your approach. Through realistic scenarios and guided practice, you'll learn to move between persuasion and negotiation as a conversation unfolds. We'll explore how to frame ideas for different audiences, build credibility, and find areas of agreement without giving up what matters to you. We'll also consider where influence ends and manipulation begins, asking not only what works, but what's ethical. You'll leave better equipped to handle difficult conversations and move people toward outcomes they might not have reached on their own.
Advanced-level proficiency in spoken English is required. Students should expect to speak without a script in small-group role-play each week.
