Whether you're curious about the basics of AI or eager to understand why it's becoming essential across every industry, this hands-on introduction will give you the knowledge and confidence to engage with AI meaningfully. You’ll explore foundational principles and the latest breakthroughs, gaining practical experience with tools that can enhance your daily work and life. Through case studies and guided discussions, you'll see how AI is reshaping industries like healthcare, finance, education, and technology—while addressing key ethical questions around bias, fairness, and responsible use. We’ll conclude with a look at emerging trends and what they mean for the future. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to understand AI’s impact, apply it thoughtfully, and navigate an AI-driven world with clarity and confidence.

No technical background is required. This course will demonstrate third-party tools that are not managed or supported by Stanford. Students who wish to use these tools are welcome to sign up independently. Many tools offer free versions or free trials; paid subscriptions typically cost $25–$100 per month, depending on the tool. Please see the course syllabus for more details.

Students can choose to attend this course on campus or online. Sign up for Section H if you think you might attend class on the Stanford campus at least once. There is no commitment—you can still choose to attend via Zoom for any session. Sign up for Section Z if you know you will exclusively attend via Zoom.
