Audiences watch movies looking for transcendence, so it's no wonder love is cinema's most enduring subject.

In this course, students will embark on a whirlwind romance with movie love stories. Each session will feature a different theme—the search for love (Let the Sunshine In), love and redemption (The Barretts of Wimpole Street), love between women (Disobedience), love between men (All of Us Strangers), love and adultery (The Deep Blue Sea), love and obsession (3 Hearts), and other topics.

Exploring love as depicted in movies over time, we will seek to discover what is timeless in the human condition and what is temporal. The former shows us the human experience at its most consistent and intense—people have always had the same hopes and desires. The latter teaches us various generations’ responses to the challenges and promises of love and life.

Seven of the eight films are screened in class, with one possibly viewed at home.
