This hands-on course is designed to introduce beginners to the fundamental techniques, tools, and principles of watercolor painting. We will start with abstract projects to acquaint students with foundational techniques, progress through botanical studies and still-life paintings, and culminate in exploring landscape compositions, ensuring a diverse and enriching learning experience.
Throughout the course, students will experiment with various watercolor techniques, including wet-on-wet, dry brush, and glazing, to achieve different effects and textures. They will explore color theory and learn to mix and blend pigments to create vibrant and harmonious compositions. Through guided exercises and projects, students will develop their understanding of composition, light, and perspective and gain confidence in expressing themselves creatively through this versatile medium.

JOSHUA MORENO
Lecturer, Department of Art & Art History, Stanford
Joshua Moreno’s work examines the overlapping relationship between the natural and human-made environment, emphasizing patterns and systems of efficiency within them. Through painting, installation, drawing, and film, he re-evaluates everyday spaces and objects, with added attention to elemental phenomena. He received a BFA in art practice from UC San Diego and an MFA in studio art from Stanford. Since 2012, Moreno has been involved in art education, teaching courses in art history, filmmaking, and art. He teaches drawing courses at Stanford and co-founded an art collective called "all of us."
