This course explores how to translate the fundamentals of photography into images that convey a sense of place. We’ll discuss creating expressive landscapes, environmental portraits, architectural compositions found in cities and rural settings, and photo essays that reveal your unique impression of a destination. We’ll examine how lenses of different focal lengths portray the same scene in distinct ways and how shutter speeds and apertures shape perceptions of time and space. You’ll discover how to use people and elements to show scale, photograph in low light, capture action, and vary perspective—all of which are applied to the goal of visual storytelling. Additional topics include preparatory research, packing equipment for travel, improvising on the road, anticipating action, and applying composition rules to new environments. We’ll also cover storing photos while traveling as well as editing, archiving, and sharing them once home. By integrating class techniques into your photography, you’ll develop a personal vision—whether exploring around the corner or around the world.
This course is open to students of all skill levels. All cameras, including mobile devices, are welcome in this course.
