When a movie wins Best Picture, the Oscar goes to the producer. Why? What does a producer actually do? Often behind the scenes, producers guide projects from the first glimmer of an idea through financing, production, and distribution before they ultimately reach the screen. Led by a veteran screenwriter and a working producer currently producing the second installment of HBO’s Task, this course offers a real-time look at film and TV production. Through examples from current and past productions, students will meet several working producers and film and television insiders while exploring everything from executive and line producing to optioning material, securing partners, and solving on-set problems (even wrangling birds) to keep productions moving. Whether viewers, aspiring creators, or simply curious about the industry, students will gain an insider’s understanding of what it takes to make films and television and the decisive role producers play in bringing them to life.

The course includes guest speakers from across the film and TV industry.

ADAM TOBIN
Senior Lecturer, Film and Media Studies, Stanford

Adam Tobin is a screenwriter and playwright. He created the series About a Girl and Best Friend’s Date for TeenNick and received an Emmy for his work on Cash Cab. Tobin also wrote the script and lyrics for The Pigeon Gets a Big Time Holiday Extravaganza! with Mo Willems and She Persisted, The Musical. He has taught story seminars at DreamWorks Animation, Blue Sky Studios, and Aardman Animations. Tobin received an MFA from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

NICOLE JORDAN-WEBBER
Producer and Creative Executive, Film and Television

Nicole Jordan-Webber is a film and television producer. She is the co-executive producer on seasons one and two of HBO's crime series Task. She executive produced Echo Valley and The Lost Bus, both on Apple TV, and she founded Northwood Pictures, where she develops and produces projects with emerging filmmakers.
