As humans, we often feel at the mercy of our emotions. From disproportionate anger to impulsive spending or sudden jealousy, everyone experiences moments when emotions take control. But what if we could manage our emotions more effectively? Advances in neuroscience and psychology help us understand how emotions are generated in the brain, and we can use that knowledge to better manage and regulate our responses. This awareness has profound implications for mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. This course will provide a foundational understanding of the neuroscience of emotions and regulation, exploring how emotions are constructed in the brain and how they influence thoughts, decisions, and relationships. We’ll define emotions and distinguish them from moods and traits. Drawing on the latest research, we’ll examine “averse” emotions like fear, anger, and sadness alongside “attractive” emotions such as joy, awe, hope, and contentment. We will practice evidence-based techniques for regulating emotions and see how they can transform the brain. We’ll conclude with an overview of common emotional disorders like depression and anxiety, equipping you with a nuanced understanding of emotions’ role in mental health. Ultimately, this knowledge will help you cultivate stronger relationships and lead a more meaningful, joyful, and fulfilling life.
