What happens when a drawing is built one layer at a time? In this hands-on course, we'll combine pencil, watercolor, collage, and other wet and dry media, discovering how each new layer shifts color, saturation, texture, and depth. Through weekly projects and demonstrations, you'll learn to sequence and combine materials. Then, evoking the passage of time, you'll scrape away layers, excavating your own work to reveal what's underneath. We'll also explore how physical layers can carry conceptual weight, turning a technical process into conceptual or metaphorical depth. Short drawing exercises and step-by-step guidance will help you develop new skills, while relaxed weekly discussions offer a supportive space to share your work, exchange feedback, and draw inspiration from fellow students. By experimenting with both building up and stripping away, you'll discover how layering can transform a simple drawing into a work rich with texture and meaning.

Students at all levels, including motivated beginners, are welcome. Some prior experience with drawing, painting, or mixed media, whether through an introductory course or independent practice, is recommended but not required. Students should expect to spend an additional $95–$125 on required art supplies.
