Join us for a hands-on field photography workshop at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Located near the Stanford campus in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this remarkable refuge is known worldwide for its geologic, topographic, and biotic diversity. It’s an ideal setting for photographing open landscapes, redwood groves, shorelines, the historic step dam, and local fauna.
This course begins with on-campus sessions for shooting and presentation experience. Our pre-field trip classes are light “mini” photo workshops focused on developing nature photography techniques. We continue with discussions using iconic examples from respected landscape artists and photographers, covering the use of natural and adjusted light, focal length lenses, macro photography, the daytime use of long shutter speeds with neutral density filters, and other helpful hints. As we explore Jasper Ridge’s serpentine foothills with our cameras, we’ll experiment with techniques to evolve our personal vision. Four guided walks will highlight different habitats at a specially organized “photo-friendly” pace.
This course is for students of all levels who wish to expand their shooting skills and develop their sense of photographic vision. Some prior experience with photography and computers may be helpful but is not required. All cameras, including mobile devices, are welcome. Field trip transportation will be the responsibility of the student; more details will be provided in class.
