Throughout history and across cultures, languages, and musical genres, love has been a leading source of inspiration and expression in music. This course is a celebration of the many faces of love found in the classical music repertoire. We will examine how composers harness the various music elements that construct a classical composition, such as melody, harmony, texture, form, and orchestration, in order to express this powerful emotion. Schubert’s lieder "The Trout," Bernstein's musical West Side Story, and Bizet’s opera Carmen each speak to the love between a man and a woman. Stravinsky, Bartók, and Ives explore love of land, while Vivaldi, Beethoven, and Messiaen focus on a love of nature. Rachmaninoff’s symphonic poem reveals a love of art, while Verdi and Handel evoke a love of God. Students will come to recognize each composer's personal signature and how they portrayed love within the context and aesthetics of their time.
