In this course, students will explore digital technologies used by Stanford medical students as they prepare for careers in the health sciences and by surgeons in the treatment and care of patients. Though cadaver specimens are the foundation of human anatomy instruction at Stanford, digital resources such as the Anatomage 3D Virtual Anatomy Dissection Table and 3D interactive anatomy apps provide the student and practitioner with data for visualizing the spatial relationships between anatomical structures and the full extent of specific anatomy that may be difficult to explore on a cadaver. Ultimately, this leads to a better understanding of anatomy and improved patient care. Students will learn how to identify anatomical structures and common clinical conditions affecting the abdomen, with emphasis on the gallbladder, appendix, and reproductive system. The course will begin with a digital presentation on the anatomy of the abdomen, followed by a review of the anatomy on cadaver specimens and the 3D Table. In the afternoon segment, students will observe surgical procedures on cadaver specimens to treat abdominal conditions. The course will offer students an insight into the combination of anatomy resources and imaging that makes learning anatomy at Stanford a unique experience.

This course is the second in a series on human anatomy titled “An Introduction to Anatomy at Stanford Medicine.” Each course focuses on a different area of the human anatomy—the neck (Fall 2024), the abdomen and reproductive system (Winter 2025), the ear (Spring 2025), and the thorax (Summer 2025). While these courses build upon one another, each course can be taken independently as well.

BRUCE FOGEL
Adjunct Professor, Division of Clinical Anatomy, Department of Surgery, Stanford Medicine

Bruce Fogel develops, directs, and teaches undergraduate, medical school, and outreach courses at Stanford. He emphasizes the relevance of anatomy as it pertains to the treatment of clinical conditions.

MIGUEL ANGELES
Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Clinical Anatomy, Department of Surgery, Stanford Medicine

Miguel Angeles is an ob-gyn and teaches anatomy to undergraduates, medical students, and physician assistant students. He emphasizes the clinical and surgical applications of anatomical principles by dissection and demonstration of surgical procedures using cadaveric specimens.
