Ever since Sarah Koenig’s breakout investigative podcast hit Serial launched in 2014 and demonstrated the medium’s potential reach and impact, everyone from Rachel Maddow and Michelle Obama to Rich Roll and DJ Akademiks has been hopping on the podcast bandwagon. Podcasting is a democratic medium, open to anyone with an appealing point of view, a warm interviewing style, or an interesting area of expertise. The market is evolving, and listeners are both interested and discerning. So how easy is it to make a successful podcast of your own? In this course, we will listen to a variety of example podcasts, from Criminal to Radiolab, study podcast story structure, analyze content formats, review podcast equipment that can work for any budget, and learn where you can host and publish your podcast for maximum exposure and profitability. Students will practice the latest recording and editing techniques to develop podcasts both from scratch and from existing content and gain an up-to-date understanding of how to make their way in the podcasting industry. Every student will leave the course with a trailer, their first five-minute podcast "pilot" episode, and an outline for an entire podcast series.

Students must have the following: a Mac, PC, or Linux computer for editing; a flash drive or external hard drive to store, back up, and manage media; editing software such as Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, Audacity, or GarageBand; and recording equipment such as a smartphone. Students must purchase their own supplies for this course, the cost of which will depend on students’ individual needs.

Audio Specialist and Sound Artist

Ryan Campos is the lead audio producer at Inner Space Center, a national facility that supports live ocean exploration and research, and he is a co-producer for the Stanford Graduate School of Business podcast Think Fast, Talk Smart. He is an instructor at the Community College of Rhode Island and the New England Institute of Technology, where he received a BAS in digital recording.
