This hands-on course is designed to introduce beginners to the art of watercolor painting through the vibrant colors and forms of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and edible flowers. Students will explore fundamental watercolor techniques such as wet-on-wet blending, color mixing, layering, and creating textures to bring simple botanical illustrations to life. The course begins with guided exercises to familiarize students with tools, materials, and basic techniques, then progresses to painting simple but striking still-life illustrations of farmers’ market produce. Through these exercises and projects, students will develop their understanding of this versatile medium and gain confidence in expressing themselves creatively through watercolor.
At the end of each class session, the instructor will do a short cooking demo using some of the produce the group has painted. Students will have the option of making the recipe at home alongside the instructor if they wish. More details will be provided prior to the first class. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course, the cost of which will depend on students’ individual needs.
Students who have previously taken ART 34: "Farm to Palette: Watercolor Painting for Beginners" are welcome to join, as the structure is the same, but the tutorials (the ingredients we paint) will be new.
