Women’s health issues—particularly those related to menopause—have historically not received as much attention in medical education as other health concerns. As a result, women often report feeling unprepared and unsupported as they navigate profound changes that can negatively impact their health and quality of life. It doesn’t need to be this way. This course is a transformative step toward breaking these barriers, offering in-depth, scientifically informed insights into a woman's body during this significant phase of life.
The course will begin by exploring the basic biology behind the menopausal transition. Students will gain an essential understanding of the pivotal role of sex hormones in health and menopause, the bodily changes that begin in perimenopause and continue through menopause, and effective approaches to alleviate common menopausal symptoms, including an in-depth review of hormone replacement therapy and new drugs. Together, we will also address crucial health considerations, such as strategies to mitigate risks related to heart disease and dementia, and delve into the impact of menopause on metabolism, immune function, and gut microbiota. Students will leave the course with valuable insights, community support, and a series of practical tools that can help women and their families confidently understand and embrace this natural life transition.
