AI art. What is this magical new tool, and can it enrich our creative process? For the first time ever, computers are able to generate images based on simple word descriptions. WIRED magazine describes these new AI art algorithms as “engines of wow.” In this introductory course, we will explore the potential of AI as a creative instrument and help you develop the skills to produce your own AI-generated art. From learning basic techniques for creating photographic and painterly images using mainstream, user-friendly applications to exploring the dynamic partnership between the human artist and the computer, this course will take you on a journey into this exciting and innovative field using hands-on exercises, artistic experiments, and collaborative discussions. Everyone has the capacity to be creative. Using AI, our course will invite you to discover and develop your own creative potential. Join us in exploring this brand-new, groundbreaking visual tool that is changing the arc of art history. Whether you are an artist looking to explore new techniques or simply interested in the intersection of art and technology, you will leave the course with an improved understanding of how AI-generated art can expand your creativity and enhance your artistic practice.
No previous experience in art, photography, or programming is required to take this course. All that is needed are basic computer skills, curiosity, and a desire to learn. Although not required, it is suggested that students subscribe to an AI image-generating service during the course. The typical cost is approximately $10 per month. Additional details will be provided in class.
