Inspired by Stanford’s Art and Anatomy program, this drawing-based course offers a focused study of the human figure through the sculptures of Auguste Rodin. We’ll begin with an introduction to Rodin’s artistic process and the anatomical principles underlying his work. As the instructor demonstrates each technique, students will draw along in charcoal, step by step. Using Rodin’s figures alongside anatomical references, we’ll examine skeletal landmarks, major muscle groups, and the expressive distortions that give his sculptures their emotional force. The course will also include short demonstrations and independent drawing, with direct feedback throughout. Students will be encouraged to work with curiosity and close observation as they strengthen their understanding of human form and develop drawings that balance anatomical accuracy with expressive gesture.
The greater part of the class takes place outdoors in the Rodin Sculpture Garden. Students are encouraged to bring a hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle. We’ll primarily be using charcoal during the session, so students should plan on wearing clothing that might possibly get messy while drawing.
Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course; the cost will vary depending on individual needs.
