How do we decide what we really want to paint out of all the possibilities? How do we build a series or body of work? What makes a strong composition? In this course, students will work on developing a stronger sense of their own voices within the creative process. We will explore various modes of painting and pathways into abstraction with experimental printmaking, collage, word and image, and automatic drawing. By juxtaposing dynamic opposites like simplicity/complexity, analytic/painterly, and organic/geometric, we will find new ways into the painting process. Students will be encouraged to keep a painting journal to help document their visual thoughts. Class time will be dedicated to slide lectures of art from ancient to contemporary times, demonstrations, individual and group critiques, and actual painting. Students will be encouraged to visit galleries and museums so they can see paintings in person and deepen their knowledge of making and exhibiting artwork. The course will culminate in the completion of a body of work.
Prior painting, drawing, or collage experience is expected. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course and can expect to spend an additional $75–$100 on these materials.
KATIE HAWKINSON
Artist
Katie Hawkinson has been engaged in exploration and invention throughout her career. She has worked in a range of media, including oil, acrylic, egg tempera, watercolor, printmaking, and wood sculpture, in order to effectively respond to the environment that inspires her. She is an instructor at UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design, and she has been teaching at Stanford Continuing Studies since 2007. Her work has been included in over 85 exhibitions. Hawkinson received a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in painting from the University of Washington. Her work can be viewed at katiehawkinson.com.
