Have you ever marveled at the mesmerizing narratives in your favorite podcasts and wondered how they’re crafted? What are the key ingredients that transform a simple story into a captivating audio experience? How can we use sound design, voice, interview tape, and writing to make our stories vivid and compelling? This course leads students through the process of transforming stories into sound-rich narrative podcast episodes. You will discover how to bring your stories to life, utilizing the power of scriptwriting, the magic of narration, the intricacies of audio editing, and the art of sound design. The course will also delve into the practical tools of the trade. Students will explore Descript, a valuable audio editing and transcription resource, and gain hands-on experience with a digital audio workstation (DAW). Students will leave the course having crafted an engaging episode trailer and will come away with a toolkit brimming with techniques to elevate their future podcasting endeavors.
This course is open to students of all skill levels, including those new to podcasting and those seeking to enhance their existing podcasting skills. While the Hindenburg production suite will be demonstrated in the course, students are welcome to work in their chosen digital audio workstation (DAW). Before the first class, students should download a free version of Descript and the DAW of their preference. Students are also encouraged to bring a story or outline they’re working on and come to class with headphones.
