What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?—Mary Oliver
For many of us, the answer is, “I want to write.” But while novels, essays, or poems may be brewing in your mind, it’s hard to find time. This course will move you toward that goal. You’ll be amazed how much progress you can make in short bursts every week. Before each meeting, you’ll write for 20 minutes in response to an open-ended prompt, often inspired by influential authors. In class sessions, you’ll push beyond that initial prompt, engage with mentor texts, explore craft techniques, and share work in breakout groups to discover where your sentences sing. From poetry to prose, micro to memoir, this course is for writers at any stage looking to jumpstart their creative practice and write with joy and freedom. You’ll leave with new writing and a renewed sense of what draws you to the page.

Because of the high enrollment capacity, students will not receive instructor feedback on writing prompts. Sections A and B of “Wild Precious Writing: Jumpstart Your Creative Practice” use different prompts. Students may register for Section A, Section B, or both. Students who have previously taken the course are welcome to join, as the structure is the same but the content is new.
