From the sentence to the paragraph, the page, and beyond, whether email or essay, the start of a podcast, or the end of a novel, what makes writing more muscular, stylish, and distinct is a technician's sense of compression. While AI can trim and shorten, it is also likely to dull your voice without honing your content. In this course, we’ll take a practical path to pressurized prose. We’ll distinguish tightness from shortness, inference from explanation, and substance from surface. We’ll add heft to the sentence, cut and keep at the paragraph level, and tighten the tough scenes, sections, and arguments in between. Finally, we’ll look at when spaciousness can do what tightness cannot. At every stop, we'll perform skill-play exercises, learning how to write for density, implication, economy, syntax, structure, excision, and restraint. By the end of the course, you’ll know how to cinch airy pages into airtight prose that delights a reader’s eyes.
Students who took the instructor’s previous course, CW 25: "The Bleeding, Pounding Heart of Prose: The Art and Craft of the Sentence," may consider this a follow-up, although there are no prerequisites.
