Mastering the art of fiction is a lifelong endeavor. While introductory courses focus on the fundamentals of character, plot, and structure, this one delves into more advanced craft techniques to elevate your writing. We’ll study chapters from A Swim in a Pond in the Rain by George Saunders and Meander, Spiral, Explode by Jane Alison, exploring sophisticated strategies for plot construction, narrative distance, and character development. We’ll analyze stories and novel excerpts by writers such as Ottessa Moshfegh, Deborah Levy, and Haruki Murakami, examining how each handles transitions, balances summary and scene, and builds an idiosyncratic voice. Students will receive writing prompts to foster experimentation and practice new techniques, and each student will workshop a story or novel segment of up to 2,000 words. Students will leave with a portfolio of new work and a more confident, skillful approach to writing fiction.
This course is intended for writers who have taken at least one course in fiction writing.
