Introduction to AI: What It Is, How It Works, and Why It Matters

Whether youre curious about the basics of AI or eager to understand why its becoming essential across every industry, this hands-on introduction will give you the knowledge and confidence to engage with AI meaningfully. You’ll explore foundational principles and the latest breakthroughs, gaining practical experience with tools that can enhance your daily work and life. Through case studies and guided discussions, youll see how AI is reshaping industries like healthcare, finance, education, and technology—while addressing key ethical questions around bias, fairness, and responsible use. We’ll conclude with a look at emerging trends and what they mean for the future. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to understand AIs impact, apply it thoughtfully, and navigate an AI-driven world with clarity and confidence.
 
No technical background is required. Students can choose to attend this course on campus or online. Sign up for Section H if you think you might attend class on the Stanford campus at least once. Rajen Sheths public benefit company focuses on giving all students equitable access to high-quality one-on-one teaching using AI. Previously, he was VP of Google Cloud AI and industry solutions as part of a 17-year career at Google and led the development of Android and Chrome for business and education, including Android Enterprise, Chromebooks for Education, and Chromebooks and Chrome for Enterprise. Sheth also helped create and lead product development for Google Apps for Enterprise and Education (now known as Google Workspace), used by millions worldwide.
