Continuing Studies online courses require the use of Canvas and Zoom. Canvas is a learning management system, or an online learning platform, where students go to access lessons, which can include readings, videos, assignments, discussions, and more. Zoom is the video-conference application used for the weekly live class meetings.

Below are the basic system requirements for Canvas and Zoom. Even though they will run with the minimum specifications, it is recommended that the most up-to-date versions (e.g., operating system and browser) and reliable internet connection available is used for the best performance.
Desktop Browsers
  • Even though Canvas supports the most current versions of several browsers, Firefox and Chrome are highly recommended.  
Computer Operating Systems
  • Windows 7 and newer (users on Windows 10 need to download the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to submit Canvas assignments)
  • Mac OSX 10.6 and newer
  • Linux - ChromeOS
Computer Speed and Processor
  • Use a computer that is five years old or newer when possible
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 2GHz processor
Computer Internet Speed
  • Minimum of 512kbps
Screen Readers
  • Macintosh: VoiceOver (latest version for Safari)
  • PC: JAWS (latest version for Internet Explorer)
  • PC: NVDA (latest version for Firefox)
  • There is no screen reader support for Canvas in Chrome
Screen Size
  • Canvas is best viewed at a minimum of 800x600, which is the average size of a notebook computer. If you want to view Canvas on a device with a smaller screen, consider using the Canvas mobile app.
Mobile Applications
  • Canvas by Instructure (iOS 9.0+, Android 4.2+). Depending on your device, not all Canvas features may be available on the app at this time. View Canvas mobile features by version and device.
Mobile Operating System
  • iOS 7 and newer (versions vary by device)
  • Android 4.2 and newer
Mobile Browsers
  • You can access Canvas from any browser on your Android/iOS device. However, mobile browsers are not supported, and features may not function as expected compared to viewing Canvas in a fully supported desktop browser.

  • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE); 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down) bandwidth
  • Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth
  • A webcam or HD webcam - built-in or USB plug-in
  • Or, a HD cam or HD camcorder with video capture card
