Join us for a concert by soprano Maria Bengtsson featuring the world premiere of God’s First Temples, a song cycle by composer Anthony Plog, celebrating the beauty of the Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy valleys as described in the writings of John Muir. Maria Bengtsson has performed at La Scala, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, and the Bolshoi Theatre. Four members of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra will accompany her as a guest string quartet for the song cycle. The concert will also include music by Handel and Haydn, Brahms Requiem, Dvorak’s Requiem, and favorite arias from Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte and The Marriage of Figaro. Anthony Plog has had a rich and varied international career in music—as a composer of operas, symphonic music, and chamber works; and as an orchestral musician, soloist, and recording artist. San Francisco Chamber Orchestra is one of the most vibrant, exciting ensembles in the Bay Area’s classical music scene, with a distinguished history of community service.

This program is co-sponsored by Planet Earth Arts at Stanford, the Stanford Department of Music, and Stanford Continuing Studies.
