Intimacy and the Art of Visual Storytelling: An Evening with Photojournalist Ed Kashi

EVT 537
Mar 1
7:30 pm (Doors 7:00 pm)
CEMEX Auditorium, GSB Knight Management Center
Status: No Registration Required
Over the past year, Stanford Continuing Studies has been proud to bring to Stanford two of the most accomplished photographers working in the medium today, David Burnett and Randy Olson. This winter, Ed Kashi joins this celebrated lineup, with a public program on March 1, followed by a weekend workshop. Kashi is a photojournalist and filmmaker dedicated to documenting the social and political issues that define our times. In the digital age, we are deluged with visual information and an overabundance of images. What distinguishes Kashi’s work is the intimacy and complexity of his storytelling. This lecture will span a range of stories, issues, and approaches that represents the frontiers of visual storytelling, from smartphone photography to short documentary films. Kashi will discuss his work with Syrian refugees and the traumatic impact of oil in the Niger Delta, as well as stories closer to home about immigration and aging.

Ed Kashi, Photojournalist; Filmmaker

Ed Kashi has received numerous awards, including Pictures of the Year International, Multimedia Photographer of the Year 2015, UNICEF’s Photo of the Year 2010, a Prix Pictet 2010 Commission, and honors from World Press Photo, Communication Arts, and American Photography. His images have been published and exhibited worldwide, and his personal projects and editorial assignments—including seventeen feature stories for National Geographic magazine— have been published in eight monographs. In 2002, he co-founded Talking Eyes Media, a nonprofit production company dedicated to social and geopolitical issues. His work can be viewed at edkashi.com.

Stanford Continuing Studies is fortunate to host Ed Kashi as a visitor to Stanford, and in addition to the public lecture, he will lead a two-day workshop on visual storytelling. For more details, see WSP 334.
