So you’ve decided to be a startup founder—congratulations! Modern software development provides a unique opportunity to build lean startups that rapidly iterate on innovation at a low cost. But it’s no secret that early stage inception is the most volatile, high-risk phase for startups. From team formation to first funding, countless hurdles exist to create a viable venture-backed software business. This course addresses common questions such as: What should I look for in co-founders? How do I successfully build a minimum viable product (MVP) and achieve product/market fit? What do customer traction and go-to-market really mean? How do I structure my pitch deck to raise VC funding? Using lectures, case studies, short videos, class exercises, supplemental readings, and guest speakers, we will cover key building blocks of forming a new software venture. Topics will include inception (team roles, mindset), discovery (MVP problem/solution fit), business model (pricing/revenue model), go-to-market (early traction, sales strategy), and fundraising (pitch deck, term sheet). Students will be encouraged to form teams and present a new venture startup pitch as a final capstone project. Aspiring entrepreneurs (pre-formation) and early stage founders (pre-seed and seed) are the target audience for this course.
