Steve Jobs headed a successful technology company, but he was not a technocrat. He oversaw the creation of stunningly artistic products and advertising campaigns, but he was not an artist. He delighted Apple shareholders for many years with huge returns, but he was not a businessman. Most entrepreneurs and business leaders know “what” Steve Jobs did but not “how” he did it. This interactive course is an attempt to demystify Steve Jobs’s distinctive and inimitable leadership style. He was part visionary artist, part exceptional manager (this may surprise many), part impulsive cowboy, and part taskmaster.

The course will discuss the metamorphosis of Apple from 1997 through 2011 by analyzing over 45 critical decisions that Steve Jobs made. The analysis will offer valuable insights and identify several patterns that could be applied by any other leader. Students will discuss Jobs’s critical decisions, understanding their complexities, challenges and opportunities. The lessons learned from the metamorphosis of Steve Jobs and Apple will be particularly relevant to both experienced and blossoming managers, leaders, and entrepreneurs who wish to combine design with function, management with art, and effectiveness with charisma while producing exceptional results.
