The people we see on stage (or on video) are the people whose ideas we hear, and the ones we view as leaders. But Women Talk Design—an organization focused on elevating the voices of women and gender nonbinary people—found that women are more likely to say “no” when invited to speak at events. We need more women speaking at events and sharing their ideas at work. We need more women leaders. This course is open to everyone but tailored specifically toward helping women become more confident speaking online. In this course, you will learn a design framework that you can use whether you're getting ready to present virtually or in person. The framework includes identifying the context of your talk and letting that inform the content, details, and presentation style you use. You will also learn tips for preparing before you present, tools to help you calm your nerves, and techniques you can implement to project confidence while on camera. Come to class with a presentation idea you want to work on, or use one of our prompts, to practice online public speaking. We will focus on designing your content for a three- to five-minute talk. You will present your talk and receive feedback from peers in a safe, supportive environment. By the end of the course, you will feel more confident in your ability to deliver an impactful presentation to an online audience.

Prerequisite: Advanced-level proficiency in spoken English. Students will be assigned a few hours of homework each week.
