With a record $373 billion in philanthropic donations last year and a steady influx of new donors, American giving is witnessing a golden age. The sector’s growth has brought with it innovative strategies for tracking impact, greater demands for transparency, new tools for researching grants, blended business models, and increased use of social media. Nonprofits are proliferating, massive wealth is passing to a younger generation, and cutting-edge technology is reshaping the philanthropic landscape quickly and dramatically, nowhere more than in the Bay Area.

Understanding these developments is crucial for practitioners—new and experienced alike—who want to contextualize, evaluate, and improve their own work. Incorporating concrete tools and resources, a variety of case studies, and a panel of experienced guest speakers, this interactive day-long seminar will give foundation trustees and staff, advisors, and nonprofit teams an in-depth look at new approaches to strategic giving and current debates in the field. We will explore smart ways to track impact, grantee-centric practices, the latest thinking on spend-out foundations, techniques for leveraging due diligence, emerging issues attracting new philanthropic attention, and high-impact nonprofit models. Participants will leave the workshop with pragmatic tools and new ideas for infusing their own practice with the latest thinking in philanthropy.

Due to its short format, this workshop may not be taken for Credit or a Letter Grade.

This course includes a non-refundable materials fee of $10 to be paid at the time of registration.

Christine Sherry, Visiting Practitioner, Stanford Center on Philanthropy; Founder and President, Sherry Consulting

Christine Sherry provides strategic, due diligence, market analysis, and organizational development services to high-impact foundations, donors, and nonprofits. Previously, she was the founding director of The Philanthropy Workshop West, a donor education program launched by the Hewlett, TOSA, and Rockefeller Foundations. She has also served on the boards of numerous nonprofits, including the San Francisco Ballet. She received a JD from UC Berkeley.
