The metaverse has been a game-changing technology 20 years in the making. The vision for the metaverse is a convergence of our physical and digital lives, where virtual simulations of reality are rendered at a mass scale. As technology continues to progress, the realism and capabilities of virtual experiences dramatically improve, creating an environment with exciting consumer engagement potential.

This course examines the basic components of a metaverse and web3 and explores business applications across a range of industries such as advertising, HR onboarding, and concert/event planning. We will begin with the basics, learning about virtual worlds, spatial technologies, and head-mounted displays (HMDs). We will then look at how artificial intelligence (AI) is powering various layers of the metaverse and consider aspects of individual cybersecurity in this largely unregulated frontier. We will also discuss cases where real businesses offer services and capitalize on revenue-generating opportunities in the metaverse, as well as how vendors use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for digital commerce.

This course will be experiential, and students will be able to use their phones, tablets, laptops, or HMDs to explore and participate in the metaverse in real time. By the end of the course, students will be able to set up a virtual world for their business or pleasure and understand various monetizing strategies.
