Traditional sources of power and influence in organizations are in decline. The old hierarchical, static organizations, typically led by white men, are being replaced by collaborative, agile, distributed structures that embrace diversity. At the same time, the need to be an effective influencer in order to get things done is growing in almost every role at every level. Simple and repetitive jobs are getting automated. Remaining jobs are more highly integrated and require more collaboration across teams, distances, and cultures, both for “official” leaders and team members.

In this interactive course, you will learn how to be seen as a leader capable of gaining followers, guiding strategy, directing resources, and having impact at scale. We will begin by exploring the key elements of “executive presence,” ranging from appearance to mindset, preparation, and even acting to meet the needs of your "audience." We will discuss ways you can increase your influence in cross-functional environments. We will learn strategies for motivating people in a variety of settings, and we will consider alternative approaches to resolving conflict. Finally, we'll discuss how to bring these skills together to project a leadership persona, i.e., someone who is comfortable possessing power and is confident, capable, and ethical in applying it.

Throughout the course, we will share experiences and learn through class discussion, breakout exercises, individual assignments, and weekly reading assignments. Your active participation will help you to grow your personal presence, power, and influence so you can deliver more impactful business results.
