What are cryptocurrencies, NFTs (non-fungible tokens), and DeFi (decentralized finance), and what impact could these emerging technologies have on society and business? In this introductory course, students will explore cryptocurrency—including the leading crypto coins Bitcoin and Ether—and how it can allow fast, peer-to-peer processing of transactions and lower transaction costs. We will also see how crypto can potentially give millions in developing nations access to financial payment systems for the first time. Within this larger context, we will discuss DeFi, a blockchain-based form of finance that does not rely on central financial intermediaries such as brokerages, exchanges, or banks to offer traditional financial instruments, but instead utilizes blockchains, making it more secure. Switching to NFTs, we will explore how they work and how NFTs can turn easily reproduced items (such as digital photos, videos, audio, and art) into unique and potentially valuable objects, and then use blockchain technology to establish a verified and public proof of ownership. Finally, the course explains blockchain technology and its applications outside the financial sector. The course will include practical real-life cases and guest speakers from the industry. By the end of this course, students will gain a better understanding of cryptocurrency, NFTs, DeFi, and blockchain technology and the impact and potential risks of these transformative technologies.

No prior knowledge of blockchain, cryptocurrency, or decentralized finance is required.

Professor of Engineering, San Jose State

Ahmed Banafa’s work focuses on blockchain, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. He is the author of three books, Secure and Smart Internet of Things (IoT): Using Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain Technology and Applications, and Quantum Computing. Banafa studied electrical engineering at Lehigh University.
