In the rush to transact more and more of our lives online, protections for our personal online privacy and security have lagged considerably. Preserving user privacy is also fundamentally at odds with the business models of the world’s largest tech companies and much of the online marketing industry itself, which means consumers are increasingly left with the burden of protecting themselves. And as approaches to hacking and fraud continually grow in sophistication, the average person with a smartphone or laptop will need to be increasingly vigilant to maintain their security.

In this course, students will learn about the wide variety of free and relatively low-cost tools that anyone can use to better protect themselves online. The course will equip students with ways to prevent their email and social media from being hacked, prevent ads from following them across the web, remove their personal information from the web, and limit their vulnerability on social media. Along the way, we will examine different types of online behaviors and technology choices that can leave users exposed. We will also discuss the pros and cons of implementing various security interventions, and we will engage in discussions and activities to help students determine which solutions will work best for them. While it is difficult to guard against every possible threat, we can strike an effective balance of effort and outcomes to dramatically reduce our risk.
