In this one-day workshop, students will experience firsthand the design of a lean and scalable data process, which will produce fast and accurate analytics to support daily decisions. You will learn how to use raw customer survey results to discover in minutes where you need to focus your marketing efforts, how connecting financial and operational data can show you where your margins get eroded, and how to use a wide variety of metrics to understand what drives your key indicators. We will go through a complete data journey, learning the technology and data aspects of every step and their optimization. Working from a raw data set, we will learn how to start with questions that lead to actions. We will learn how to research relevant data and design an efficient data collection process that will prepare the data for easier, higher-quality connection and calculations. We will create business-driven data models to facilitate analysis and navigation through the data, and also use high-speed analytics that will let analysts search data almost at the speed of thought. By the end of the workshop, you will know how to deliver analytical and impactful reports that will drive rapid and focused actions, and you will be more familiar with data processes that can deliver time gains, accuracy, and sustainable results.

This course is recommended for students who have taken BUS 103: “Become a Data CEO: A Framework for Mastering Data and Driving Innovation” (Winter 2018) or “Tame Big Data to Drive Big Insight” (Fall 2017), or anyone with reporting and analytics expertise who wants to move away from spreadsheet-based processes.

Students are required to bring a fully charged laptop computer with wi-fi connectivity to class. They must have access to Google Drive and the ability to install and run third-party software for the duration of the workshop, whether in the cloud, via browser, or on the machine.

Grade restriction: NGR only; no credit/letter grade
