One of our most vexing challenges is how to deal with conflict effectively. This course is designed for those who desire greater nuance in communicating during difficult and seemingly intransigent conflicts. Effective listening and clear communication lead to decreased stress, increased job satisfaction, commitment to relationships, and accountability for work performance. We will explore the seeds of conflict, methods to prevent or redirect its trajectory, and specific templates to manage or resolve conflicts. Focus areas include dealing with difficult bosses, co-workers, challenging employees, and mystifying family members. Through effective questioning, role-plays, case studies, and feedback, students will analyze and create inventive ways to address their toughest interpersonal dilemmas. Techniques will cover establishing boundaries, calling out offensive behavior, managing power differences, and defusing conflict with precision and grace. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of their conflict style and a greater repertoire of skills for discerning the most effective communication path forward.

Advanced-level proficiency in spoken English is required.
