Thoughtfully and intentionally cultivating company culture has emerged as a key differentiator among companies competing for top talent. Today’s leaders must foster an environment where strong teams can thrive, and where employees are deeply engaged and invested in company success. To develop the critical elements for building high-functioning teams—collaboration, shared vision, and a spirit of creative innovation—a multimodal and integrated strategy for creating company culture is required. As today’s workforce prioritizes authenticity and purpose in professional life, hacked-together efforts cannot compete with thoughtfully designed programs. This course offers a framework for approaching the complexities of company culture, addressing the topics of talent attraction and retention, diversity and inclusion, internal branding, leadership development, and meaningful employee engagement. We will consider both high-level vision and granular tactics, as well as the specific challenges of early stage companies when they move past the startup phase. As we explore key concepts within this clearly defined design framework, we will study real-world examples of companies that successfully build high-performing teams—and some that have experienced critical missteps. Presentations and discussion will focus on how an integrated approach can cultivate a self-perpetuating, virtuous cycle of healthy company culture.

Robert Joyce, Principal, Social Impact Designs

Robert Joyce has experience in business development, communication design, and project management. Previously, he led the development of the Founders Pledge program for Full Circle Fund, a community of startup founders who have pledged company equity to nonprofits. Joyce also led marketing and communications for HealthRIGHT 360 during multiple mergers and the launch of a $15 million capital campaign.
