With the great resignation upon us, the role of a manager today has never been more crucial to the success of an organization. According to a 2021 McKinsey & Company report, the top reason employees cited for quitting was that they didn’t feel valued by their organizations or managers. The skills that made leaders effective prior to Covid are no longer sufficient for the current world of work. Managers are now facing unprecedented challenges as they navigate leading in remote and hybrid work environments, all while attempting to build resilience within themselves and their teams. Managers who are able to take a relational approach to cultivating their employees’ development will help their teams thrive. This course will provide managers with the knowledge and tools they need to do just that. Specifically, we will cover how to foster psychological safety, lead by coaching, build positive relationships, facilitate career conversations, and give and receive feedback.

Through class discussion, breakout exercises, and individual assignments, you’ll learn to grow your leadership toolkit. You will be paired with another classmate to serve as a peer coaching partner, deepening your learning and reflection outside of the course. You will come away from this course with a clear understanding of how to effectively lead with empathy and compassion, cultivating a thriving team.

Students should expect an hour of homework per week, plan to attend all sessions, and be comfortable sharing personal information in a small-group setting. Students will be required to purchase a CliftonStrengths assessment ($20) before the course begins. The instructor will provide more information upon enrollment.
