Builders of successful startups never stop thinking about new ways to innovate and improve their businesses. It’s just as important that they never stop learning about entrepreneurship. This course will introduce you to Silicon Valley CEOs, advisors, and investors and will zero in on ways in which these experts have guided startups to success. Guest speakers and experiential exercises will guide us through fundamental questions that a new company must address as it proceeds from launch to more advanced stages: What are the pros and cons of applying to an accelerator, and how can a startup increase its chances of being accepted? As a startup grows, what new skills must a founder develop and master? How do the initial and later stages of fundraising differ? How can a startup enhance the likelihood of raising Series A and subsequent rounds of financing? How can founders work best with advisors and directors? How can mergers and acquisitions be employed both to grow more rapidly and to secure an exit more readily? Once a startup achieves a sufficient level of success and decides to be acquired, how can it best position itself for a successful acquisition?

Drawing on the experience of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, students will be able to take actionable ideas away from this course and use them to build and improve their startups.

Guest contributors include: Michael Anderson (co-founder and CEO, Stache); Neerav Berry (co-founder and co-CEO, Payplant); Tom Kemp (co-founder and former CEO, Centrify); Randy Komisar (partner and advisor, Kleiner Perkins; co-author of Straight Talk for Startups); John Jarve (partner emeritus, Menlo Ventures); Ambarish Malpani (vice president of product and application security, SAP); Mary McDougall (vice president, Astia; former president and CEO, Survox); Camilla Olson (CEO, Savitude); Diana Peterson (principal product manager, Khan Academy); Thane Plambeck (co-founder, Counterwave); and Rob Reis (founder and CEO, Higher Ground).

BUS 45 W builds upon the lessons learned in BUS 11 W: "How to Build Successful Startups: Learn Lessons Straight from Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs.” Students may take these courses in either order. BUS 45 W will cover ten weeks of content in an accelerated, three-week format. Students should expect to spend at least eight to ten hours per week on this course.

Co-Founder and COO, OnRisk

John Kelley's company provides software services to the commercial insurance industry. Earlier, he founded 399 Innovation, which advises firms on invention and innovation strategy. He received a JD from Stanford, where he pursued an independent research track in artificial intelligence and law. Kelley also studied at Sorø Akademi in Denmark on an American Field Service Fellowship.
