The Internet of Things (IoT) connects devices such as thermostats, traffic lights, security cameras, bridges, and dams to the internet, allowing the devices to collect and share massive amounts of data, and ultimately use that data to perform increasingly intelligent functions. Digitally connected objects offer new innovation opportunities for entrepreneurs to build businesses in wearables, digital health, the connected home, smart cars, and smart cities. What’s more, the transformative power of IoT promises to disrupt entire industries—medical, auto, home appliances, insurance, manufacturing, among others. This course will take a case study approach and teach entrepreneurs and business innovators how to build a completely new IoT business, or to extend an existing business into new markets using IoT. Students will learn a new framework to design IoT products, create value from IoT data, and successfully scale IoT businesses in consumer and B2B industries. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to build a business plan to apply their learning. Guest speakers from several industries will visit the class and discuss such topics as IoT strategy, cognitive IoT data, business models, and the venture capital investment landscape.

Guest speakers include: Christian Mastradonato, Chief Technologist, Konika Minolta, UK; Dr. Jonathan Reichental, CIO, Palo Alto; Mrinal Wadhwa, co-founder Ockam; Rashmi Rao, Head of Global Engineering & Intelligent Transport Systems at Harmon; Dr Aleksander Poniewierski, Partner & Global IoT Leader, EY; Roxy Stimpson, CTO, IoTWorldLabs; Anupam Rastogi, Nokia Venture Partners; Kyle Columbus, Mercedes-Benz;  Andrew Thomas, CEO, Skybell; and  John Mattison, CMIO, Kaiser Permanente.
