Why is it so hard to change our behavior? Why do we find it difficult to exercise, eat better, be more mindful, quit smoking, or to be a better spouse or parent? Why? Because, despite the common wisdom, it doesn’t take just “twenty-one days” to form a habit. If that were the case, you could have just motivated yourself. Research tells us it can take at least sixty-six days to form the kind of habits that really matter. But, no matter how motivated we are, 80 percent of us still give up on our resolutions after just six weeks.

So what’s the answer? Motivation may get you started, but it’s habit that keeps you going. Designed and clinically validated by licensed, certified, and published clinical psychologists from Yale, Stanford, and the University of Washington, this course will train you to apply proven cognitive behavioral techniques to create new, automatic, habitual routines. Through lectures, readings, videos, individual and group exercises, and discussions, the course will present a synopsis of the best clinically tested, evidence-based behavior change research, distilled via easy-to-use, practical diagnostic tools. By the end of the course, students will know how to incorporate and, more importantly, sustain important new habits in their day-to-day lives.

WHAT MAKES OUR ONLINE COURSES UNIQUE:

  • Course sizes are limited.
    You won't have 5,000 classmates. This course's enrollment is capped at 45 participants.

  • Frequent interaction with the instructor.
    You aren't expected to work through the material alone. Instructors will answer questions and interact with students on the discussion board and through weekly video meetings.

  • Study with a vibrant peer group.
    Stanford Continuing Studies courses attract thoughtful and engaged students who take courses for the love of learning. Students in each course will exchange ideas with one another through easy-to-use message boards as well as optional weekly real-time video conferences.

  • Direct feedback from the instructor.
    Instructors will review and offer feedback on assignment submissions. Students are not required to turn in assignments, but for those who do, their work is graded by the instructor.

  • Courses offer the flexibility to participate on your own schedule.
    Course work is completed on a weekly basis when you have the time. You can log in and participate in the class whenever it's convenient for you. If you can’t attend the weekly video meetings, the sessions are always recorded for you and your instructor is just an email away.

Michael Kim, CEO and Founder, Habit Design

Michael Kim founded the first clinically validated habit training program, which has trained over 100,000 people across organizations such as Apple, Google, Facebook, Stanford, IDEO, and others. Kim also leads Kim Advisory Capital, a disruptive innovation consultancy whose clients include several Fortune 100 technology companies. A former Microsoft executive and founder of Microsoft’s New Consumer Products Studio, he was appointed to advisory boards at the White House and MIT Media Lab. Kim received an MPP/MBA in innovation management from Harvard.
