Like writers, photographers use all of their tools— lighting, composition, and serendipity—to help capture the telling moments and raw emotion that contribute to a memorable and impactful story. Using the instructor’s own Pulitzer Prize winning story as an example, we will discuss how to find a story (or what to do when a story finds you), and how to develop that story into an engaging photographic narrative. In this three-day workshop, students will learn how to approach people to gain trust and access, in order to capture with their camera what is authentic and how it contributes to the documentary narrative style. On Friday, students will learn the skills to create a visually compelling photographic narrative, whether it’s for a personal project or a story for a magazine, website, corporation, foundation, or nonprofit. On day two, we will venture out to several locations to practice the techniques learned in class as we each photograph our individual stories. Students may research a cultural or human interest story in the local community before the Saturday afternoon shoot. During group critiques on day three, we’ll edit students’ stories and discuss transitions, sequencing, and visual pacing, all the while keeping an eye on our ultimate goal: creating honest, emotional images that convey a compelling narrative.

Students should have access to a digital camera and a basic working knowledge of and proficiency with it. Field trip transportation will be the responsibility of the student.
