Have you ever wondered if a photograph truly reflects what the camera captured? In this course, we will explore post-capture edits and how, when used thoughtfully, they can create a more compelling portrayal of our experiences. Through demonstrations, exercises, and lectures, we’ll cover modifications such as exposure, cropping, contrast, white balance, and color saturation. We will address a fundamental question: What changes should we make to an image and why? We’ll examine what makes an image compelling, and discussions will include visual integrity, visual literacy, and the ethics of photo manipulation. Additionally, we will explore the boundaries of photojournalism, visual storytelling, artistic expression, and the convincing portrayal of pure fiction in a world increasingly influenced by AI. By the end of the course, students will have gained a better understanding of both the nature of these adjustments and, perhaps more importantly, when and how to use them to refine and strengthen their images.

All skill levels and all cameras, especially mobile devices, are welcome. The instructor will use Adobe Lightroom Classic for demonstrations. Students should have access to some form of photo editing tools, including the native photo apps on mobile devices and a variety of free online options.
