Chinese brush painting is considered one of the oldest living arts in the world. Rooted in a rich tradition of more than 6,000 years, it is a fascinating and unusual art form. Each brushstroke, the most fundamental characteristic of Chinese painting, is a defining move that cannot be corrected. The quality of the brushstroke captures the main essence of a painting.

One of the most revered subjects in Chinese culture is the peony. Known as the “Queen of Flowers,” it is treasured for its beauty and nobility. This course will introduce students to the philosophy and symbolism of the peony as a Chinese brush painting subject and will focus on the painting techniques, materials, and composition of peonies in Chinese art.

Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course and can expect to spend an additional $40–$60 on these materials.
