From love and friendship to art and food, this course will make interesting topics accessible to students with a basic background in Spanish. Aided by scaffolded instruction, which progresses from familiar to newer material, students will discuss acclaimed short films, news articles, and short stories, increasing their oral proficiency as they gain an appreciation for the depth and breadth of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world. By the end of the quarter, students will be able to discuss substantial topics with greater ease and sophistication.

This second-year course is intended for students who have completed “Beginning Spanish III” in Stanford Continuing Studies or its equivalent.

Hae-Joon Won, Lecturer in Spanish, Stanford

Hae-Joon Won grew up in Peru, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, and received a PhD from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Her specialty is Spanish Golden Age literature and drama of the 17th century.
