In this lively, interactive course, students will boost their reading comprehension and speaking skills through captivating short stories and poetry from Latin American greats, including Pablo Neruda, Julia Alvarez, and Elena Poniatowska. A continuation of the “Beginning Spanish” series, this course uses audio-visual and textual support activities to aid students in further developing their interpretive and interpersonal language abilities. Classroom activities will include pair and group interactions, short films, vocabulary and grammar review, and oral presentations—all designed to expand and reinforce our understanding of the reading and its cultural underpinnings. Upon completion of the course, students will comprehend written Spanish with greater ease and begin to recount their own stories with increased confidence.

This second-year course is intended for students who have completed “Beginning Spanish III” in Stanford Continuing Studies or its equivalent.
