In this course, we will approach layering as a powerful method for making technically complex and conceptually nuanced drawings. In weekly projects using a variety of wet and dry media (pencil, pen, watercolor, gouache, collage, and others), we will explore the subtleties of color, pattern, saturation, and depth achieved through layering multiple media on paper. Students will share their work in weekly discussion forums, receive and give feedback, and inspire each other in a relaxed and supportive creative community. We will discuss technical aspects, such as how to sequence or alternate dry and wet media, as well as ways to express conceptual or metaphorical depth through physical layering techniques. Layering is both an additive and a subtractive process, so we will also experiment with excavating, erasing, and eliminating layers to give a sense of weathering, time, and disintegration. There will be demonstrations, with step-by-step images, as well as weekly live videoconferencing sessions where students can ask questions, get feedback, and participate in short drawing exercises. Students will have the opportunity to experiment and practice combining, mixing, and layering media, and will learn how to use layering as an effective method for creating meaningful and compelling drawings.

While this course is open to all levels, it assumes some experience with basic drawing. It is recommended that students have taken at least one course in drawing, mixed media, or painting (or have similar experience). Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course and can expect to spend an additional $55-$75 on these materials.
