When we look at a photograph of an individual, what does it say about that person? Or does it say anything at all? When we capture a portrait, we have an opportunity to tell a story in a single photograph. In this course, we will learn the art and skill needed to create images that—through their content and composition—express a vibrant narrative about the people we photograph.

Students will have the opportunity and time for close mentorship, development of skills in a supportive environment, and a clear review of each student’s images and growing portfolio. We will learn how to photograph extraordinary portraits of people in their ordinary, everyday settings—portraits that reveal a greater story about our chosen subjects. Utilizing the natural light that creates mood and ambience, and paying attention to time and place, gestures, expressions, and body language, reinforced by interesting and solid composition, students will produce portraits that go far beyond the snapshot.

This course is designed for both aspiring and advanced photographers. Students should have access to a digital camera with a manual exposure mode. Field trip transportation will be the responsibility of the student.
