With your iPhone, you can easily take a picture of family, friends, strangers, or pets. But how do you make a good portrait? This course will utilize the iPhone and a variety of apps to show you how to create stunning portrait images. We will cover posing, directing your subject, the use of natural light and props, and choosing environments and backgrounds. We will begin with an in-depth review of your iPhone’s built-in features that can enhance your images. Then we will cover several approaches to portraiture, including traditional, lifestyle, environmental, candid, and street photography, as well as how to prepare your subject(s), what to look for when shooting, and tips on interacting with and engaging people. You will learn ways to “say something” about the person(s) you are shooting and ways to make a creative portrait. We also will review software made for the iPhone for enhancing and processing your images in order to create flattering finished pieces. Demonstrations for shooting in Portrait mode and of apps for editing your images will be live, so you can utilize their features immediately. Recommendations for preparing your files for printing and sharing and a resource list for various printing and framing options will be posted, along with additional course materials.

Students must complete “Introduction to iPhoneography: Using Your Smartphone to Make Extraordinary Images” (WSP 294 or PHOTO 32) or have comparable experience shooting with an iPhone, prior to enrolling in this course. A list of apps that will be covered in this course will be posted online for enrolled students in advance of the course. Portrait mode with Depth Effects and some features demonstrated in the course are available only for the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max and the 11, 12, and 13 series; however, all models of iPhones are welcome, as most of the content will be applicable to every model.
