Most of us envision our retirement years as a time filled with enjoyable experiences. However, a crucial piece of that vision is not addressed in typical retirement planning: having good cognitive function in our later years. In the same way that we start financial planning for retirement decades in advance, we also should begin planning for our cognitively aging brains when we are in our forties and fifties. Everyday habits in middle age will affect brain health and cognitive function in our seventies and eighties. In this one-day workshop geared for the pragmatist, you will learn about evidence-based approaches to maintaining good cognitive function as you age; the importance of regular physical exercise, social connection, and good sleep for your brain; and how to be a savvy consumer of brain-training products as well as brain-boosting supplements—recognizing which products are effective and which are hype. You will learn methods for keeping new habits and will make an individualized plan for incorporating cognitive-boosting activities into your everyday life. By the end of the workshop, you will acquire the tools to create and execute a retirement plan for your late-life brain.

Quinn Kennedy has more than twenty years of research experience in adult aging. Her work has been published in scientific publications including Psychological Science, Psychology of Aging, and The Journals of Gerontology, and featured on NPR and in The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Science. Kennedy received a PhD in psychology and completed postdoctoral training in cognitive aging at Stanford.
